Early in her career, Mariel quickly identified healthcare as the field in which she wanted to develop her expertise. For over a decade, Mariel’s practice has focused on the representation of health care providers – including hospitals, physician groups, individual physicians and nurses – in both litigation and non-litigation matters. She has extensive experience with defense of medical malpractice claims and has handled hundreds of cases through all aspects of the litigation process, from the initial case investigation through case disposition, whether that is by dispositive motion, settlement, jury trial or appeal.

Mariel successfully defends complicated medical malpractice claims by making it a priority to understand the context and clinical aspects of the claim at issue, and by staying up to date on the latest issues impacting the medical profession. As a result, Mariel has expanded her field of practice to include advising healthcare clients on day-to-day legal issues, such as HIPAA compliance, responding to licensing boards and/or government investigations, employment matters, provider and/or hospital contracts, and general risk management.

Mariel handles every case and legal issue with a client-first approach: she takes the time to get to know each of her individual clients, including their preferred level of involvement in a case, their communication styles, their personal anxieties and concerns resulting from being involved in a legal matter, and their desired approach to resolution. Mariel is always available for client questions or concerns and believes strongly that prompt attention and responsiveness is a right she owes to every client.
